Houston workshop to help gardeners grow top-shelf tomatoes

Tomatoes are a popular food crop for Houston gardeners, and an upcoming workshop will help them to produce a bumper crop.

Secrets for successful tomato growing will be the focus of a workshop planned for the Urban Harvest Teaching Garden, which is geared towards beginners. Other spring-planted vegetables will be covered as well, and tools and gardening gloves will be supplied for the use of the participants.

The class has been designed so that it offers actionable advice, and tickets for the evening are priced at $35. The topics covered include soil preparation and mulching, and the use of fertilizers and compost will also be discussed, along with planting transplants so that they will be strong and produce nutrient-dense crops. Everyone will go home with a supply of seeds as well as a tomato transplant and some organic, slow-release plant food so they can get growing right away.

The host of the session explained that this will be an in-person class, and refunds will not be available. Additional details about the function will be sent out closer to its scheduled date. Many groups that offer educational programming choose to order learning materials from area poster printing companies.

This hands-on activity for local newbie vegetable growers is scheduled for March 1. Sharon Stinson will serve as the presenter for the occasion.
