The Houston Museum of Natural Science (HMNS) offers a variety of exhibits, programming and other opportunities for the public to learn, and a date has been scheduled that will make it more accessible to those with sensory processing issues.
Thanks to support from the Joan and Stanford Alexander Family Fund, the HMNS will be running its next sensory morning in late September. Free permanent exhibit hall passes will be supplied, and can be claimed by registering in advance.
To make the venue more accommodating, the exhibits will be modified so that the environment will be as sensory neutral as possible. Modified shows will be screened in the Wortham Giant Screen and The Burke Baker Planetarium, and the sounds and lights will be reduced. Backpacks will be available that contain items such as sunglasses and ear defenders, and these can be checked out at the Museum Services Desk. The visitors will find a variety of interactive Touch Carts will be set up in various locations, and disabled individuals are encouraged to attend along with her siblings and other family members.
Taking the needs of disabled guests into consideration helps to make a venue more accessible, which means everyone can join in the fun. Stationery printers can provide materials such as written Copies of safety rules, tactile signage, social story Booklets and other items.
The HMNS has scheduled its next sensory-friendly morning for September 27th. Anyone interested can register through its website.
