Houston plans plant propagation class

Incorporating native species into the home garden benefits people and wildlife alike, and a Houston class will offer tips for propagating these plants.

The class that has been scheduled for Houston Arboretum will explore methods that can be used to successfully propagate native species, and as the learning will be hands-on, everyone will get in lots of practice.

The instructor will introduce species that are native to the area or may be hard to find in the nursery trade. The facilitator will lead the group outdoors so they can collect seeds as well as cuttings, and they will then get some in the field experience at seed starting and rooting a cutting. Everyone will go home with some native plant seeds as well as sprouted seedlings and cuttings, and other supplies will be provided as well. Sturdy walking shoes are highly recommended and the participants are reminded to wear clothing that is suitable for the weather.

Plant propagation and other horticultural practices provide an economical way to fill a garden with native species. Promotional Products, including dibblers, gardening gloves, planting zone guides and other materials for an activity can be ordered from area Print shops.

The Houston Arboretum and Nature Center will be providing this introduction to plant propagation on April 5th at 4501 Woodway Drive. Both members and non-members are welcome, and while minors may take part, they need to be accompanied by an adult.
