Free expo set to showcase assistive technology

The Abilities Expo is taking place in Houston for three days next month.

This free event is a showcase for businesses that are dedicated to providing assistive technology, as well as an educational opportunity for the general public.

There are set to be a number of educational workshops taking place, including such topics as Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy 101, the art of a hobby, and emergency preparedness for people with disabilities. There will also be an Ayita wheelchair dance presentation and class, an artists’ market featuring the works of artists with disabilities for sale, and a service dog demonstration.

Other activities will include sports like wheelchair rugby, sled hockey, and wheelchair and ambulatory tennis, along with a mock cosplay (costume) competition and an Abilities Meet-up Zone for networking and socializing.

Guests will have the use of free loaner scooters, a sign language interpreter, and free wheelchair repair.

This event will likely attract people from all over the Houston area, those with disabilities, and those who support them. To spread the word, organizers might invest in flyer printing services.

The Abilities Expo will be held at the NRG Center in Center Hall E from August 4 to 6 from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. For more information, or to apply to become a speaker at the expo, contact Sarah Galbraith Laucks at 717-497-4305.
