Busy month for storks at Womans Hospital of Texas

As December wound down, the number of births at Woman’s Hospital of Texas mounted to surprising heights.

October officially turned in the highest number of births of 2015, but December’s numbers were unexpected high and according to the director of Labor and Delivery, Theresa Lewis, the rush of the holidays meant that December’s delivery rate seem even higher than it was.

It was reported on December 30 that the Houston hospital had delivered 947 babies so far for the month. In one day alone, 49 babies were born.

The Woman’s Hospital of Texas, which delivers more babies than any other Texas hospital, welcomed its record-breaking 11,000th baby of 2015 in the early morning of December 24. Four babies were in contention in the overnight hours of December 23 and 24 to be the coveted 11,000 birth. Alijiah George Lee, at 7lb and 9oz, was the winner, giving his parents something interesting to ask a Stationery printing service to include in his birth announcement.

Possible explanations for the high numbers include wild swings in barometric pressure and the stress of holiday preparations, plus the believe of some that a full moon can lead to increased birth levels. However, other hospitals in the area have not reported an unusual number of births and an explanation for why Woman’s Hospital has seen such an uptick is elusive.
