New Fort Worth police chief joins the ranks

Joel Fitzgerald was sworn in as the new chief of police of Fort Worth on Tuesday, October 20, 2015.

Fitzgerald is the 27th officer to hold the post, and the first African-American. Fitzgerald, who is 44 years of age, came to Texas from Pennsylvania, where he was the chief of police in Allentown. He also spent 17 years in the Philadelphia Police Department.

Fitzgerald began his tenure with a 20-minute speech, telling around 200 city personnel, law enforcement officers, and council members that he sees the police as Fort Worth’s most visible face. He called on them to see police work as problem solving, and a “collective process”, reflecting his belief in the efficiency of community policing, which he intends to pursue in Fort Worth.

Fitzgerald will now oversee a department of about 1,500 police officers who patrol a city of approximately 800,000 people. His former department in Allentown comprised roughly 220 police officers. They went to neighborhood watch meetings regularly, and Fitzgerald helped set up a basketball league for young people, with officers serving as coaches. He plans to continue his hands-on approach in Fort Worth.

Chief Fitzgerald will want to work with a Stationery printing company to have Letterheads printed to reflect his new position. He can also work with a business card printing company on his new cards.
