Fort Worth unveils plans for convention center upgrade

Fort Worth has released its plans for a significant glow-up for its downtown convention center, introducing a sweeping second phase that would eliminate the 1968 arena and put in its place a four-story addition.

According to city leaders the purpose of the $606 million renovations will be to attract larger conventions by modernizing the aging complex with new ballrooms, exhibit halls and outdoor terraces. When it is finished the expanded center should have exhibit hall space of about 257,000 square feet as well as ballroom space of 74,000 square feet and 61,000 square feet made up of meeting rooms.

Outdoor plans call for a plaza with terraces designed for hosting outdoor events along with native prairie landscaping.

The run up for the demolition of the arena will commence in summer 2026 with the actual demolition taking place in early 2027. In September of 2026 the arena will likely conclude its final scheduled event. Project managers told council that construction should take up at least the rest of the decade with a targeted completion Phase 2 to be early 2030.

Leading the expansion of the convention center will be Atlanta-based TVS Design in partnership with Bennett Partners of Fort Worth. The construction manager-at-risk team for Phase 2 will be the same as that of Phase 1.
