Long-running country fest marks Independence Day

Fort Worth welcomes Willie Nelson’s 4th of July Picnic this weekend. Now in its 41st year, the all-day event takes place outside of Billy Bob’s Texas and draws multi-generational attendees.

The country music event, hosted by legend of the genre Nelson, will include performances from the likes of Dierks Bentley, the Josh Abbot Band, Jamie Johnson, and Ryan Bingham, as well as one from Nelson himself.

The picnic festival started 1973, when Nelson was just 40 years old. He held the first festival in a field, which was located in Dripping Springs. More than 40,000 people attended to see top stars like Kris Kristofferson, Tom T. Hall, and Waylon Jennings perform. This was the inaugural event that became the Texas tradition it is today.

Just three years later, it was welcoming a record 70,000 people. In 2004 Nelson announced that the picnic was going to the home town of his boyhood, this being Fort Worth.

Tickets for the event cost $40 if bought in advance, or $60 on the day of the show. VIP and skybox tickets were also available at $125 and $250 respectively, although these were quick to sell out. Merchandise will be available, which has no doubt kept poster printing companies busy.

More information on the 2014 event, which will take place regardless of the weather, can be found on the event website.
