QuikTrip, the convenience store giant, wants a small portion of the 41-acre Backman Creek Greenbelt along Lemmon Avenue in exchange for providing a greenbelt trail along Bachman Lake.
QuikTrip would like to build a new store between Bachman Lake and Northwest Highway along Lemmon Avenue at the former Radio Shack site. Believing the ideal spot for that new store’s entrance would be a small piece of parkland adjacent to the site, the company is willing to barter for that spot.
On February 8, the Quality of Life Committee for the Dallas City Council was briefed on QuikTrip’s offer. In exchange for an agreement granting it a minimum of 20 years’ of control over that corner, QuikTrip will pay to have a trailhead and greenbelt trail designed, constructed, and maintained.
Park and Recreation planner Jason Ney, pointed out that land the company has its eye on is “not useable because of the awkward configuration”. As council was divided on the proposal, it voted to refer the matter to the whole council with neither a recommendation for or against the deal. Members of the public will have ample time to visit a flyer printing service and get busy drumming up support for or against the deal.
On February 10, the full council decided to table the matter until April. Members of the public will have ample time to visit a flyer printing service and get busy drumming up support for or against the deal.
