Dallas tax free back to school products prove a hit

From midnight Friday August 9 to midnight on Sunday August 11, certain back to school items were sold tax free across Texas, including Dallas.

Shoppers turned out in their hordes to grab bargains on supplies needed to be ready for the return to school. Specified items are sold free of sales tax, which adds up to around $8 for $100 spent. According to state officials, almost $79m of local and state taxes were not collected during that weekend.

Retailers usually offer even more special discounts and offers at this time of year, opening much longer hours to give shoppers even more opportunity to save money. Local printing services were also involved, producing the Stationery to inform people of the offers available and extended shopping hours.

Included in the tax free goods were shoes and clothing costing less than $100. Even roller blades were sold tax free. Book Bags, Backpacks, pencils, Pens and calculators were all among those items that found homes. However, computers and text Books were not included on the list of tax free school supplies.

Every year since 1999, Texas has provided a holiday from sales tax on specified back to school items to help parents to kit out their children ready for the new school year, always running from midnight on the Friday to midnight on the Sunday to give people a maximum amount of time to get involved.
