The Dallas City Council has approved funding for convention center upgrades in preparation for its use as the International Broadcast Center (IBC) of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Council’s unanimous vote to approve the necessary $15 million needed to restore the Kay Bailey Hutchinson Convention Center was an expansion of the $8 million that was already budgeted. Funding for the convention center is provided by a hotel tax and can only be used for convention center projects.
It is still not official that Dallas will be named by the FIFA as the IBC host city; however, according to Dallas City Council, Dallas is the only city left in the running. An official announcement is anticipated from the FIFA in the next few months.

The city has a $3.7 billion plan that includes demolishing the existing convention center and rebuilding it. That plan is being shelved temporarily so the city can seize this opportunity. Council members consider the upgrades that will enable the city to host the IBC to be money well spent.
As the center for operations for thousands of international medal reporting on the World Cup, the IBC will bring considerable revenue into the city. It isn’t just the number of journalists but also duration of their stay, which will be several weeks, that makes landing the IBC such a big deal.
