Southwest Airlines and Dallas Love Field sign 15-year lease

A recent news release reveals that the lease for 18 Dallas Love Field gates has been extended for Southwest Airlines by the Dallas City Council until September 2040.

The new lease is a pro-active step to maintain the airport’s dominance. Southwest Airlines lease was to expire in September 2028; however, the Department of Aviation advised the adoption of a new Use and Lease Agreement. Their reasoning for their recommendation was that extending the lease ensures predictability of costs and provides financial and operational stability which will be a valuable asset as passengers flying through Love Field increases.

The new lease agreement offers a foundation for long-term investment and planning that will assist Love Field to serve rising passenger demand. A by-product of the agreement is the continual efficient operation of the airport and the ability to relieve congestion.

Among medium hub airports in the United States, Dallas Love Field is the busiest, handling around 17 million passengers annually and annual boarding by the end of 2026 projecting to reach 10 million.

In addition to its extended lease agreement, Southwest Airlines has also implemented a policy change concerning its baggage checking fees. After years of not charging a fee to check Bags, the airline began charging $35 for an initial checked bag and $45 per additional Bags per passenger on May 29, 2025.
