New bus on the way for local seniors centers

Seniors in Arlington will soon have a new way to get to and from activities not only around their local area, but further afield as well.

The Eunice Activity Center and the Senior Recreation Centre New York will have access to a brand new bus, with comfort and accessibility more in mind than with the vans that are currently in use. The new vehicle will feature a wheelchair lift, a low step that makes it easy to get off and on, and individual reclining seats, which will be comfortable for longer trips.

The purchase of the new bus was made possible by a $100,000 grant from Arlington Tomorrow, which is a group that helps to fund projects around the community. The donation will allow for immediate purchase of the vehicle, without having to get funds from city council. The total cost for the project will be $97,335. The bus will be purchased from Creative Bus Sales, and should be available in January.

City council unanimously approved the purchase.

The yearly operating costs are expected to be around $24,454, which will be mostly recouped from small user fees. It will be used to take seniors on day trips to places like the Texas state fair and Lake Texamon. It is hoped that it will also be suitable for longer trips.

Brochure printers will be able to produce schedules that can be distributed to the seniors so they will be able to make plans around upcoming scheduled trips.
