The Stroudsburg-based Monroe County Historical Society is hosting a lecture series while its historic house museum is closed for renovations.
The Third Thursday Lecture Series will run from April to October and cover a variety of local history topics including an environmental protest movement in the 1960s and 70s, photography during a severe flood in 1955 and an important ocean liner built during the Cold War. The May program, “Promised Land and the Civilian Conservation Corps” will discuss the CCC, which employed more than three million young people and planted 3.5 billion trees between 1933 and 1941. Peter Gonze, who retired from the pharmaceutical industry and is now a hobbyist historian, will give the talk.
These lectures are free to attend, but those interested are asked to sign up in advance either by calling the historical society at 570-421-7703 or sending an email through the group’s contact form. Historical organizations often use brochure printing services to share information about local history. Each lecture will take place in a different location in Monroe County, so those planning to attend should check the event page for the latest details. The talks will be recorded, and those from previous years are available on YouTube.
The Promised Land and the CCC will take place on Thursday, May 16 at 7 pm at the Barrett Township Administrative and Recreation Complex.
