Professors to discuss opera in East Stroudsburg

Two associate professors will be the presenters as part of the Provost’s Colloquium Series at East Stroudsburg University this month.

This series provides an experience to encourage dialogue among students, faculty, staff, and the community. Eugene Galperin, Ph.D. (mathematics) and James Maroney, Ed.D. (music) are its presenters.

Titled “Dramatic Expression, History, Politics, Love, and Tragedy – Why Opera Still is Relevant Today,” the talk will enable the two professors to share their love of opera in terms that people with little or no knowledge of the artform will understand. Among the topics will be various national and period styles of opera, its history and origins, and the examination of the relevance of opera in society today. The goal is to introduce this special cultural resource, which the local community and the university can enjoy.

As an introduction to the Live-In-HD series of the 2021-2022 series of the Metropolitan Opera, the talk will focus on works the Metropolitan Opera is scheduling for this year at the Cinemark Theater at the Stroud Mall. Among the performances will be Lucia di Lammermoor by Gaetano Donizetti, Don Carlos and Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi, and Modest Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov. Many printing services are often used to promote such special performances throughout a community.

This talk will take place in the Cohen Recital Hall at 5:30 pm next Wednesday, October 6.
