The Madelon Powers Gallery at East Stroudsburg University (ESU) will be featuring an innovative, mixed media exhibit with a relationship to the local area beginning this month.
Such techniques as poster printing can be used to inform the college community of this sort of exhibit and its several related activities.
The collection is a continuation of work begun in 2003 by artist Margaret Cogswell. It uses the musical composition style of a fugue to interlace the relationship between water and humans using the media of drawings, sound, video, and sculpture. There are also recordings of narrative from residents of East Stroudsburg addressing water-related issues in the region. Cogswell explained that these recordings help to link such issues with others that are explored in the exhibit.
In addition to her artwork, Cogswell has also taught art at The College of Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine; Rhode Island School of Design; and the University of Hawaii-at-Manoa, Honolulu, among others.
The exhibit runs from February 1 until March 8, and an artist’s reception took place on the evening of last Thursday, February 7. In addition, later in the month, at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, February 27, there will be a panel discussion and artist presentation with environmentalists and members of the ESU community to examine the work and issues presented in the exhibit.
