East Stroudsburg University (ESU) recently received approval from the State System of Higher Education of the Board of Governors of Pennsylvania and Chancellor Daniel Greenstein, D. Phil., to award a Doctor of Health Science (D.H.Sc.) degree.
This second doctoral degree program now awaits approval from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) by the end of April. If approved, ESU plans to launch this program in the upcoming academic year.
There will be two concentrations in the D.H.Sc. degree. One is in Advanced Research Administration and the other in Health Management and Administration. All students in the program complete a core set of courses and then select a concentration. Brochure printing can be used to provide more details about such courses and any prerequisites.
Faculty from ESU and adjunct faculty with specific specializations for certain courses will be teaching the curriculum. The basic courses are covered in nine semesters, after which students need to complete a dissertation on a health sciences topic of interest. Joanne Bruno, J.D, Provost of ESU, said that with courses over the weekend, the program can be completed in three years.
Marcia G. Welsh, Ph.D., President of ESU, said there is a critical need for healthcare providers in the Pocono Region, which translates to a need for this doctoral program. It will enable those in the healthcare field who wish pursue studies in advance clinical research, move to allied health administration, or find a career in higher education.
