Laura Kieselbach, Ph.D., assistant professor of English at East Stroudsburg University, will be the next presenter at the university’s Provost’s Colloquium Series.
This series of talks is designed to encourage discussions among the staff, faculty, students, and community at the university.
The title of her talk is ‘Discussing Cultural Perceptions of Learning and Teaching’ and will focus on the ability of teachers to enable their students to develop an equitable, fair, and personal understanding of people from all types of cultures. Her research has looked at teaching that is culturally relevant and investigates the cultural competency of students in their own and other cultures, and how teachers can help students to feel comfortable in their own cultures.
Kieselbach argues that multicultural education is often brief and artificial, resulting in students’ developing stereotypes of other cultures and viewing culture from a narrow standpoint of the dominant culture in a society. Participants in her research will share their comments at which time the audience will also be able to participate.
Kieselbach will also discuss some of the successes she has had in her own teaching and how students have grown and developed from teaching practices that are culturally relevant. Poster printing can be used to inform the college and surrounding community of such unique presentations.
The talk will take place beginning at 5:30 pm this Wednesday, April 3 in the Beers Lecture Hall.
