College to offer special scholarships

New scholarships for residents of Pennsylvania who are first generation or transfer students have been announced by East Stroudsburg University (ESU).

One is a series of Transfer Scholarships for transfer students from choice regional community colleges, while the other is Gen One Scholarships for those who are the first in their family to go to college.

Karen Lucas, vice president of enrollment management for ESU, said that some students have had particular challenges in making a decision to attend college. Lucas added that it was decided to find some funds so that these students would have the opportunity to attain a college degree. Half of the cost of tuition would be waived for those who receive a Gen One Scholarship to attend ESU in the academic program of their choosing. To receive one of these scholarships, prospective students need to indicate on the admissions application that they are first-generation college students, and once accepted, these students will then be interviewed for the award.

The transfer scholarships are tiered with the value of the award ranging from $2,000 a year at the silver level, to $6,000 a year at the platinum level. Eligible students need to come from a select college identified by ESU.

Students can apply for these scholarships now, and they will cover the Fall 2021 semester.
