The teams were evaluated on the past 10 years of data against three metrics: championships, winning percentage, and playoff appearances. Each team received a z-score in each of the three metrics that compares its performance against the entire group’s average, as well as indicates if the figure falls above or below the average and to what degree. The sum of the scores in the three areas produces the team’s overall score.

The Pittsburgh Steelers ranked the eighth most successful among the four major professional sports franchises, and it came in third in the NFL. The Penguins were eighteenth overall and third in the NHL.
