Grow Pittsburgh, a local not-for-profit organization that offers a variety of initiatives in support of food growing, distribution, and general gardening, will be sharing its knowledge at an upcoming horticultural workshop.
The group has scheduled a class that will introduce the art and science of growing ginger at home. Both indoor and outdoor options will be discussed, and the registration fee for the session is $10 per person.
The hour-and-a-half-long workshop will introduce ginger, the rhizomes of which are a popular ingredient in many dishes. Participants will find out that it is possible to grow this herb outdoors in Pittsburgh, even without access to a greenhouse, and farmers Tara and Hannah will guide the activity. Attendees will find out how and where to source ginger seeds, as well as how to pre-sprout them for growing success. After this, the discussion will move onto transplanting and harvesting for the table, as well as preserving the ginger for future use.
A horticultural workshop can surprise people about how many food plants they can grow at home, and Stationery printers can provide everything from printed packets for storing and distributing seeds to tip sheets and growing guides geared towards a specific area.
Grow Pittsburgh will be sharing the secrets of successful ginger cultivation next Wednesday, October 9. It will be offered at 806 Holland Avenue and starts at 5:30 pm.
