The Carnegie Museum of Natural History is bringing back its Birdsafe Pittsburgh program in 2022, and one of the parts of the initiative is its Lights Out campaign. The goal is to prevent window strikes and disorientation that may be caused by artificial light sources, which can make a big difference to the over 100,000 birds that pass through the region each migration season.
The release for the activity explained that residential, commercial, and industrial buildings can all take part. All they need to do is reduce their external and internal lighting as much as possible, from mid-March to the end of May. This is especially important between the hours of midnight and 6:00 am, and offers an easy way for the average individual to lend wildlife a helping hand.
