Smart traffic control to aid Bala Cynwyd roads

Adaptive traffic signals are being installed by the City Ave District, with an eye on easing traffic congestion at five area intersections.

A project expected to be completed in March should see St. Asaph’s Road in Bala Cynwyd easier to transverse due to the installation of new traffic signals at five of the road’s most vital intersections. The new signals are referred to as adaptive signals because they use a variety of means to adjust their timing to fit traffic conditions and facilitate traffic flow.

Explaining how these new signals will alleviate traffic congestion could increase sales for businesses in this area. With the help of brochure printers, the local business community could come together and educate the public on the effects of the new signals.

The new smart signals will take the information supplied from a wireless system and video cameras to adjust the signal timing, taking into account the approach of vehicles from every intersection approach. The objective is to reduce backups, as well as improve safety of pedestrians seeking to cross at those intersections.

In addition to the smart signal systems being installed, upgrades will be made at the St. Asaph’s and Monument Road/Presidential Boulevard intersections. Upgrading will be made to the pedestrian push buttons and signals, as well as pedestrian ramps to bring the intersection into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
