Locals invited to Valley Forge for Washingtons birthday

February 20th will mark the 285th birthday of America's first president, George Washington, and Valley Forge could be the perfect location for Ambler residents to celebrate this special event

Valley Forge was the location of the first public celebration of Washington's birth. That party took place in 1778 during the middle of the Revolutionary War.

Guests to this year’s special event will be welcomed by figures representing President Washington and his First Lady. Mrs. Washington will share her special Great Cake.

There will also be crafts, 18th-Century clothes to try on, and the opportunity to sign up for the Continental Army. Children can join the army as they practice drills and march and join along as the troops receive special orders from the President. Parents can help their children to prepare for the event by encouraging them to design and Print birthday cards and Posters to take with them to the celebration.

The attractions at Valley Forge help children and adults to learn more about the Continental Army and its leader, General George Washington. It was at this location, now a 3,500-acre historical site, that Washington's army trained and lived during the brutal winter of 1777-1778.

No battle took place at the site and, yet, more than 2,500 soldiers died during that fateful winter due to malnutrition and disease. The location proved vital for allowing Washington and his men to keep British soldiers from entering central Pennsylvania. Despite the hardships, the remaining troops were able to emerge the following summer ready for battle
