The Act II Playhouse in Ambler will be reuniting a fan-favorite duo this January for a revue featuring a variety of comedy routines.
The show, “A Couple of Swells”, will feature Tony Braithwaite and Jen Childs, a pair well known in the Phialdelphia comedy scene for their two-person act. Structured as a cabaret or sketch show, the performance will see Braithwaithe and Childs take on routines from classic acts such as Mike Nichols and Elaine May or George Bruns and Gravie Allens. The duo will also return to their original characters of cruise lounge performers “T. B. And Jenny.” Owen Robbins will provide musical accompaniment on the piano.
The Braithwaite and Childs duo has previously performed at Act II a number of times, most notably in a show called “Together Again For the First Time” in January 2020. One performance night, January 20, will be Community Partner Night, meaning that a portion of all ticket sales will go towards Weavers Way Cooperative. A Couple of Swells is part of Act II’s 2021-22 season, which kicked off with the holiday performance “Really Good Tidings” and will conclude with “Together Off Broadway”, a tribute to the duo of Ethel Merman and Mary Martin. The playhouse, where Braithwaite also serves as Artistic Director, uses tools like brochure printing and social media to advertise upcoming shows.
A Couple of Swells will hold previews between January 11 and 13, and officially open on January 14. The show will run until January 30, with all performances at the Act II Playhouse.
