Salem’s Elsinore Theatre is hosting a performance known as HYPROV this March.
The show takes its name from a combination of “hypnosis” and “improv,” with the unexpected blending of the two Forms of stage performance selling out venues in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the US.
The 90-minute show involves Asad Mecci calling upon 20 volunteers to the stage to be hypnotized. A few are selected based on their receptivity, joining comedic actor Colin Mochrie, from TV’s Whose Line is it Anyway?, on stage to perform an improvised show.
While Mochrie is not put under the spell, the audience participant sharing the stage performs with him while under hypnosis the entire time.
Both Mochrie and Mecci insist that the act is genuine – so much so that they have named their current show, hitting multiple cities, the “Yes, It’s Real” Tour.
Outlets such as The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Time Out New York have all praised HYPROV. Performances like this may choose to use flyer printing to create low-cost promotions in the community, audience programs, or setlists.
HYPROV: Improv Under Hypnosis - The “Yes, It’s Real” Tour is happening on Saturday, March 14 at 7:30 pm, with doors open at 6:30 pm at the Elsinore Theatre at 170 High St SE in Salem.
