Oklahoma! is coming to the Elsinore Theatre in Sale this June. Presented by the Delphian School Theater Program as its year-end production, the play is considered a Broadway classic and the first collaboration of the legendary musical duo of composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist/writer Oscar Hammerstein II.
Rodgers and Hammerstein, as they are often referred to as a pair, would go on to helm such hits as The Sound of Music, The King and I, South Pacific and Carousel.
With a country-western setting in the early 20th century, Oklahoma! focuses on the romantic rivalry between a self-assured cowboy and a mysterious farmhand, who are both vying for the hand of Laurey, a farm girl with a fiery spirit.
Even after more than 80 years since its original debut in 1943, Oklahoma! still holds relevance to this day. A late 1990s revival on Broadway helped get actor Hugh Jackman into the national spotlight before his role as Wolverine in the X-Men films made him a household name.
The Delphian School’s production of Oklahoma! was made possible through a partnership with the Gallery Theater and the Pentacel Theater, which assisted with costumes.
