A Salem volunteer group will be running the city’s portion of an annual event that takes place across the world in late June.
Make Music Day Salem is a festival based on Fete de la Musique, a French celebration that began back in 1982. Since then, it has spread to many international cities. Performers of every genre and skill level are encouraged to join the festivities.
MMDS focuses on the sense of community and teamwork, allowing venues and artists to work directly together on the staging and equipment needs for each performance. Due to the nature of the event, participating businesses are not able to charge the MMDS non-profit or the artists. The stage and other materials are funded through donations if the venue does not already have what is needed.
Acts taking part can register on the MMDS website. Here, they can be paired with the best performance space, all of which are outdoors. Anyone interested in playing with a larger group can join a “Mass Appeal” show, where musicians who all use the same instrument can come together and play a well-known tune.
Attendance is also free for the spectators. Acts may have merchandise with their Logo Design for sale nearby the stage they are performing at for the audience to shop from. Donations can also be made via The Salem Foundation, and are also tax deductible. The event happens annually on June 21, with this year’s celebration running between 1:00 pm and 11:00 pm.
