Sports Fields idea favored for post office site development

Portland’s urban renewal agency considered several concepts to replace the city’s central post office before recommending basketball courts and sports fields book-ended by high-rises.

Three concepts for the long-planned public space were floated in 2018 by Prosper Portland and partners. The options presented along with the Sports Fields idea were a succession of scattered plazas and a nature-focused “urban forest”.

Large developments, particularly mixed-used ones, sometimes turn to Logo Design as a branding and promotional tool.

The recommended concept also assimilates Portland’s Green Loop project for a six-mile pedestrian- and bike-focused parkway through downtown, the Central Eastside and Lloyd District. The central post office property is near the Broadway Bridge’s west end and its 14 acres is one of the city center’s biggest development opportunities.

The city chose Continuum Partners of Denver to spearhead the planning effort. Continuum will not receive any monetary compensation, but will have first option to purchase the post office site from Portland and move forward with the development once a plan has been finalized. The city paid $88m to the U.S. Postal Service for the site but should recoup the cost when the land is sold.

The post office sorting and distribution facility is now located close to the Portland International Airport. Currently the old building is still housing its original retail post office; however, the building will be demolished prior to the start of redevelopment.
