Portland regains access to container shipping service

It was recently announced that SM Line, a container carrier based in South Korea, will be providing container shipping service weekly to the Port of Portland in 2020.

During a recent trade excursion to South Korea, Governor Kate Brown and her party talked with SM Line executives. Brown and her group argued their case on behalf of the city, suggesting the company begin continuing connections with Portland’s trading partners in Asia.

SM Line’s decision to provide container service to Portland has been met by enthusiasm from the Governor. She sees it as a means to create more jobs for residents, more chances for local companies to grow and an incentive for companies to choose Portland as their base of operations.

Since 2017, Portland has not had direct container service, which resulted in local importers and exporters having to send their containers by train to the ports of Seattle and Tacoma. Port of Portland Executive Director Curtis Robinhold said:

“We are thrilled to welcome SM Line and give regional shippers more options and better connect Oregon businesses to global markets.”

The return of direct container service may well attract new export and import companies to Portland, which would no doubt result in orders for more Business Cards and Letterheads, among other products.

SM Line will include a Portland call by a vessel leaving on December 22, from the Chinese port of Ninbo, which is anticipated to arrive here in January 2020.
