Parkrose High Schools Portland Rose Festival princess named

Natalie Mathers, a senior at Parkrose High School, was recently announced a princess in the Portland Rose Festival court, making her a contender to be named the festival’s Queen in June.

Mathers, who expects to attend the University of Oregon next fall, plays varsity volleyball and softball. The Parkrose High School representative received the news during a livestreamed Zoom meeting, which was attended by other court nominees, members of the media, and school and festival representatives.

Large festivals and fairs commonly will have their own Logo Design or slogan chosen each year.

The Zoom meeting announcement contrasted considerably from the traditional in-person crowning that would normally include court candidates standing shoulder-to-shoulder for photos in formal gowns. Instead, a series of screen grabs were made of her in a yellow cardigan. Mathers unmuted her microphone long enough to express her thanks and excitement at being Parkrose’s 2021 representative.

In total, 15 young women will make up the court, each representing a Portland area high school; the last princess to be announced will be St. Mary’s Academy on April 16. Each member of the court will receive a scholarship in the amount of $3,500 provided by The Randall Group, as well as a Unitus Community Credit Union arranged one-on-one mentorship. Public appearances by the court will be based on evolving COVID-19 precautions.

As it was in 2020, staging of the Queen’s Coronation will be held in Washington Park in June.
