Historical Society library reopens with reservations required

The Oregon Historical Society, located in Portland, has for the last year-and-a-half had its research library closed for renovations; however, it is now open but due to COVID social-distancing guidelines reservations are required.

A banner printing service can be used to announce a reopening as well as first time opening.

During late 2019 and the first part of 2020 the vast research collection of the Historical Society was packed away in preparation for scheduled renovations that were long overdue. Included in the materials being relocated to an offsite storage facility were thousands of Boxes containing rare Books, photographs, manuscripts, oral histories, photographs, recordings and other various odds and ends.

The renovations are finished now and advances in technology for finding and using the society’s materials have been integrated for increased efficiency. Other improvements include viewing stations for map-and -architecture-drawings. In this way digitized and original materials that an individual wishes to see from the huge collection of documents belonging to the library have a central access point.

The reopening is welcome news to all who have an interest in Oregon history. Unfortunately, there is a caveat; the research library, located on the OHS building’s fourth floor at 1200 Southwest Park Avenue, may be open and free to use but it is still covered by the COVID-19 precautions. Due to social-distancing guidelines the Historical Society reading room will be held to 25 percent capacity.
