Eagle Creek Trail reopens to hikers

Once again, Portland residents can hike the Eagle Creek Trail and other trails that have been closed since 2017 when the Eagle Creek Fire destroyed 48,000 acres of the Columbia River Gorge.

It was recently announced by the U.S. Forest Service that many popular trails in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area are now accessible to the public. In addition to the Eagle Creek Trail, the following other trails opened on New Year’s Day: The Gorge 400 Trail, the Wahclella Trail, and the Larch Mountain Trail from Multnomah Falls to Wahkeena Trail.

The Forest Service warns hikers of the increased danger presented during and immediately following winter storms, heavy rains, or high winds in areas consumed by the Eagle Creek Fire, due to the potential for falling trees and landslides. Matt English, Hood River County Sheriff reiterated the Forest Service’s warning, saying:

“While we are very pleased to see the re-opening of this cherished trail system in the gorge, we urge those who choose to explore to employ caution on their outing. Historically, we see a very high volume of search and rescue calls in that area.”

Those in charge of large areas set aside for hiking sometimes partner with Print shops to create maps of the area, including instructions on what to do in the event of an emergency.

As per a closure order issued by the Forest Service, areas affected by the Eagle Creek Fire remain closed, as do some trails within that area’s perimeter.
