The grant, which was awarded via the Port Infrastructure Development Program of the U.S. Maritime Administration, was announced by the state’s U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley. The program’s purpose is to fund safety, efficiency, and improvement projects at ports around the U.S.
The Port of Portland will use these funds to upgrade and strengthen the pavement in Terminal 6’s cargo storage area near Kelley Point. The grant will also be used to purchase a stormwater treatment system to boost energy efficiency, which will help the Port achieve its zero-emission goals by cutting pollutants that drain into the Columbia River.
Print shops are often employed by government agencies to assist in keeping the public informed.
Curtis Robinhold, the executive director of Port of Portland, explained the grant’s impact:
“The pavement and electrical improvements made possible through the DOT grant will improve operational conditions and increase the efficiency, productivity and safety of cargo handling throughout the Port’s Terminal 6.”
In the announcement, Merkley expounded on the crucial role ports play in keeping Oregon and the whole of the Northwest’s economies running smoothly. He explained they are both necessary for moving goods throughout the region, as well as exporting Oregon’s products throughout the world.
The Port of Portland oversees the state’s only marine container terminal.
