The city of Portland, having receiving only three applicants for the new position of community safety director, has decided to recruit nationwide for applicants.
The new safety director will have an annual salary of $197,246, which will come from the $300,000 recently approved by the city council. Also coming out of the funds set aside for the new position will be benefits for the director and staff support.
The director will be charged with working with the city’s police, fire, emergency management bureaus, and emergency communications to locate more efficient ways of operating and handling their budgets. The new position will be part of the Portland’s Office of Management and Finance and will be overseen by chief administrative officer, Tom Rinehart.

The individual filling the new position will steer the efforts of public safety bureau directors or chiefs and supply quarterly reports to City Council. Until a director is chosen, the four public safety bureau leaders will collaborate with their corresponding city commissioners to draw up a budget for fiscal year 2021-22. Funding for the city’s safety bureaus comprise 40% of the general fund.
According to city officials, the objective is to have filled the position by January.
