Restaurant to tempt Portlanders with deep-dish pizza

Many of Portland’s pizza lovers have yet to truly embrace the deep-dish variety, but now a new pizzeria is slated to open and the city’s pizza habits may change.

Deep-dish carts have come but never lasted too long here in the past, but the San Francisco Bay has laid claim to being the country’s second biggest deep-dish city. The most popular choice for deep-dish in San Francisco is Little Star, which brought its buttery, rich cornmeal-crusted deep-dish pizza to the City by the Bay in 2004.

Jon Guhl, its co-founder, is bringing a new yet similar pizzeria to Portland. The Star, which utilizes many of the same recipes as Little Star, will be opening its inaugural Portland location in the space formally occupied by Paragon in the Pearl District by the end of 2019.

Being part of a chain makes opening a new location less of a gamble, as people can check out reviews from other locations. However, many owners choose banner printing to advertise their grand opening.

In addition to pizza, The Star will also serve garlicy, cheesy pull-apart Bonanza Bread, baked wings and a few other dishes, plus a full bar.

Going by Little Star’s success in the San Francisco area, if The Star can maintain its same level of quality, it could well change the way Portland enjoys pizza.
