Portland is celebrating the anniversary of Laika studio’s first animated feature “Coraline” with a special art and culture initiative.
Coraline’s Curious Cat Trail is an event to celebrate the local studio’s landmark production, and will see 30 large cat sculptures scattered about downtown Portland.
The Cat Trail, which is a collaboration of the Visit Downtown Campaign and Laika, will include a social media presence, a website and maps to show where all the statues are located.

The film “Coraline” was an adaptation of a Neil Gaiman novella and was written by Henry Selick, who also directed the film. Earlier in his career, Selick also directed the stop-motion animated “The Nightmare Before Christmas”.
The almost six-foot-tall statues, inspired by the movie, will be all in place by August and collectively known at “Coraline’s Curious Cat Trail”. The cats will be hand painted by local artists. Once the event has ended, an auction will be held to sell the cats statues with the money going to OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.
The “Coraline” movie’s 15th anniversary will be celebrated with a 3D remastered re-release in August, in addition to the “Curious Cat Trail”.Get a Free Quote for Print
