Portland car-free Sunday Parkways returns with added location

The first of the 2025 Sunday Parkway events will begin in May with a fourth Portland neighborhood added to the popular event’s roster.

For the last two years three locations have taken a turn at hosted the event during the summer; this year, however, a downtown location has been added. A news release issued by the Portland Bureau of Transportation, which operates the event, explained that this will be the first time in nearly a decade that downtown will be the site of a Sunday Parkways.

According to the Transportation Bureau the plan going forward is to hold four events with a single new route each year.

The gist of the event is that specific streets are blocked off from car traffic thereby enabling numerous individuals to ride, roll and walk on specified portions of Portland’s neighborhood greenways. Vendors and volunteers are actively being sought.

Many businesses put in an appearance at these types of events in addition to vendors using them to raise their profile, with business cards as well as promotional products frequently being handed out freely.

The first of this year’s Sunday Parkways is scheduled for May 18 in Southwest Portland, to be followed on June 29 in Northeast Portland’s Cully neighborhood and on July 27 in East Portland. The 2025 Sunday Parkway events will culminate on September 14 with the one to be held downtown.
