Print shops can play a meaningful role in getting the public onboard to keep already enacted programs in place.
Portland Sports Bar & Grill owner Jeffrey Ottman saved his business during the pandemic by putting several tables outside. The action worked surprisingly well. Customers utilized the tables during the spring, summer and fall and even in winter. Ottman was quoted on KGW News as saying:
“Looking back the beginning it was incredibly tough, it was excruciatingly depressing. Now we're actually profitable every single month. Now we can have a full patio successfully in November with heaters—something we never had before. We're excited how it's going to change our business for the future.”
Ottman’s lease agreement will enable him to keep his patio open for outdoor dining year-round, yet other eateries are dependent on the Healthy Business permit program of the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) for permission to use their outdoor space. Beginning in May 2020, hundreds of restaurants have used the program to seat patrons on closed side streets or along the curb in parking spots.
According to PBOT, the response from the community to the Healthy Business program has been gratifying and extending it indefinitely is an issue the PBOT is exploring.
