Portland residents will once again have an opportunity to revisit the begone era of burlesque as, for the seventh time, Portland will play host to the annual Oregon Burlesque Festival (OBF) in late September.
Taking place at the Alberta Rose Theatre, the event will be held over two evenings, each with its own host and program. The venue opened in 1927 as a movie theater and continued to show films until 1978.
The first night of the OBF, on Friday, September 22, will be hosted by The Mad Marquis who is the Critical Hit Burlesque’s founder and artistic director. M. Marquis frequently serves on stage as an emcee through the Northwest and weekly hosts the Jack London Burly Q Revue at Rialto Pool Hall. Additionally, he is the producer of a series of burlesque shows filled with nerdy pop culture references called Popular Geeklesque.
On Saturday, September 23, Sailor St. Claire, nicknamed the Showgirl Scholar, will be hosting OBF. Since 2009, St. Claire has been combining her love of literature and burlesque to provide her audiences with “an education in the humanitease”. She is also the co-artistic director of a literary burlesque company called Noveltease Theatre, which she and writer-choreographer Fosse Jack co-founded.
