Ian Muntzert along with his partner-wife Erin are in the process of getting Brasa Haya, their new Spanish restaurant, up and running here in Portland.
Ian was the former managing partner and chef de cuisine at San Francisco’s popular restaurant, Commonwealth, which was known for its affordable tasting Menus, one-Michelin-star cooking, and community donations. The Commonwealth closed in 2019 following a rent increase.
The couple’s new venture will be housed in a historic foursquare home built in 1906 at 412 NE Beech Street. Upstairs will be dedicated to reserved dining and the downstairs is expected to have a casual vibe, where diners can feel free to just drop by. Additional seating will be available for 20 on the front porch of the house.

Two well-known Spanish restaurants in Portland have closed – Toro Bravo and Ataula, with the latter confirming it will not be reopening having been shuttered during the pandemic, so it is hoped this new venture will fill the void left by them.
Brasa Haya expects to open June 9, offering 20-30 mainly Spanish wines to begin with, as well as beer on tap and classic cocktails with a twist. Meals will be affordable with most dishes priced at $20 or less.
