Forest Park hike ties addresses fires and ecosystem

A series of hikes has been scheduled to run over the next few months, teaching how fire management is linked to the health and welfare of communities and the sustainability of the Portland area woodland ecosystems.

Rudy Dietz, a FUSEE (Firefighters United for Safety, Ethics and Ecology) Naturalist, will be conducting a series of easy-going two-mile hikes over the course of a 10-week period, teaching common native plant identification and the essence of wildfire management. Participation for the hike is free, although registration is required.

FUSEE advocates for ethical, safe, ecological fire management via policy advocacy, public education and media outreach.

The series of hikes begin April 16 and continue bi-monthly through June 25, taking place 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. While on the hike participants will learn how to identify common native medicinal, edible and non-edible plants.

When a limited number of participants are being recruited, a flyer printing service may offer the optimal promotional capability.

These hikes are designed to educate those interested in learning more about the recent increase in wildfire activity. Participants will learn about what causes forest fires, as well as their effects on our woodlands.

Hiking dates are on April 15 and 30, May 14 and 28, and June 11 and 25.

To register for one of hikes, email fuseehikes@gmail.com and receive the meet-up location and more detailed pre-trip information.
