E-scooters to return to Portland

A second e-scooter pilot program was recently announced by the Portland Bureau of Transportation following a report that showed over half of Portland residents hold a favorable view of the scooters.

According to the report, Portland residents utilized the scooters as a substitute for driving. Thirty-four percent of riders say they choose to ride scooters rather than driving or using ride-sharing service.

Also included were issues with the scooters, among which were problems staff of Parks and Recreation experienced and issues with scooter parking. Plus, scooters had increased difficulties for accessing some sidewalks and some riders appeared to be unaware of a few key rules that apply to e-scooter usage.

Brochure and poster printing offer many communities a means of reminding the public of certain rules that have been routinely ignored. An example could be the unlawful use of scooters in city parks and on sidewalks, which present a danger to pedestrians and particularly for those with vision impairment and mobility challenges.

Riders prefer to use the scooters in areas that offer a scooter-friendly, safe infrastructure, when possible. A review of urgent care clinics and emergency departments’ data show that e-scooters share similar levels of risk as other forms of transportation.

This second trial period will last a whole year, but when its start date will be has yet to be announced.
