Year-round shelter to come to Beaverton

Beaverton is planning to build the first shelter that will be opened year-round.

The city has purchased the standalone commercial building, which spans 12,000 square feet near Highway 217 off Southwest Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway. The space was selected by city leaders as it is centrally located near social service agencies, food, transit, and opportunities for employment.

The shelter will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and will offer guests a clinic spaces, meals, beds, and showers. Washington County will operate the shelter, partnering with a contracted service provider. A spokesperson for Beaverton, Dianna Ballash, said that a competitive process will be used to select a non-profit for the shelter.

Ballash added that the shelter will be for adults of 18 years of age and older. She said that there may be some additional guidelines upon entry. Those wishing to use the shelter will need to enroll through Community Connect in order to be assigned a bed.

Local print shops can be hired to create flyers with more information about such shelters so those in need will know their location and how to sign up for their services.

State and federal funding will be used for the purchase and development of the shelter and will amount to $4.5m. Some funds will be made available from American Rescue Act.
