Beaverton library selects book for community reading
Tracy Kidder’s “Rough Sleepers: Dr. Jim O'Connell's Urgent Mission to Bring Healing to Homeless People” will be the book to read for the One Book, One Beaverton reading program for the community, presented by the Beaverton City Library.
The book is about Dr. Jim O’Connell. O’Connell was a man of many talents who created a community of care for the unhoused population of Boston, including those who slept on the streets and are known as the “rough sleepers.” O’Connell deferred a prestigious fellowship to spend one year of his life that turned into his calling. Kidder travelled with Dr. O’Connell for five years as he offered medical care on the streets of Boston, as well as soup, socks, humor, empathy, and friendship to some of the most vulnerable residents in the city. The book provides a nuanced and humane view of a problematic issue and treats its subjects with compassion and dignity, which they often do not receive.
Kidder is a graduate of Harvard and studied at the University of Iowa. Among his awards are the Robert F. Kennedy Award, the National Book Award, and the Pulitzer Prize.
There will be a series of special events related to the book in January. There will be An Evening with Tracy Kidder at The Reser on Saturday January 17. Such events can be promoted throughout a city and a region with flyer printing.
