Beaverton named finalist for special award

A groundbreaking cooperative housing project is being launched by Lacey Beaty, mayor of Beaverton, to address the housing needs of seniors and create intergenerational community spaces.

The Bloomberg Philanthropies 2025 Mayors Challenge has named Beaverton as one of 50 global finalists as part of its efforts to recognize cities that are developing solutions to important urban problems. Beaverton was selected from more than 630 applicants across 33 countries and recognized for its proposal. $50,000 will be given to the city to fund and receive expert guidance in creating a prototype for its idea.

The proposal of the city would focus on building duplexes, triplexes, and multi-unit structures that work well in residential neighborhoods and endeavor to foster deeper connections in the community. Beaty said that residents would be involved in the design and planning process to ensure that the development reflects the values and needs of the community. The goal of the project is to create a housing system that works for a wide range of people, from young families that are looking for their first home to seniors settling into their next stage in life.

Local Print shops can assist in promoting these projects and gathering community feedback by creating Posters, Flyers, and other printed materials.

Beatty added that if full funding is received for this project the city could become a model for housing reform across the country.
