New permanent shelter to come to Beaverton

The ground has been broken on the first permanent emergency shelter in Beaverton.

This will be a shelter that will be open all year to provide increased stability for those who are experiencing homelessness, and to offer an important connection to housing. The shelter will offer rooms for 60 people, showers, laundry, three meals a day, a space for a clinic, and supportive services that will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week throughout the year.

The shelter will span 12,000 square feet and is in a heavily trafficked business district, with access to public transportation and within walking distance to social service agencies, opportunities for employment, general shopping, and groceries.

Poster printing can be used throughout such cities so that those in need will know where they can go for assistance, once the project has been completed.

State and local funding in the amount of $9 million will go towards the construction of the shelter. A unique opportunity of funding from Metro supportive housing services available through Washington County will cover the costs of the ongoing operations of the shelter.

Chair of Washington County, Kathryn Harrington, said that partnership is an important aspect of all the work that is done in the city and county. Harrington added that this shelter is an example of how the community and local governments are working together to deal with the crisis in housing.
