New arts center under construction in Beaverton
Construction of the Patricia Reser Center for the Arts is currently underway in Beaverton. It is hoped that this center will become the cultural and arts hub of the westside suburbs and provide many such opportunities for Portland which has exhausted its space for the arts.
The center will measure 43,000 square feet and cost $51m. Reser has pledged $13m through the Reser Family Foundation for the construction of the center. Executive director of the Beaverton Arts Foundation, Lani Faith, said that 96% of the costs for construction have been covered through a public-private partnership.
An amount of $21m will be covered by the city in the form of revenue bonds, which will be supported by a lodging tax, which was enacted in 2016. Other sources of funding are $1m each from two local donors and a $1.5 grant from the state legislature to be taken from Oregon Lottery money.
The general manager will be Chris Ayzoukian, who has spent the past 17 years with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The vision for the center is to present distinguished artistic talent from around the world, provide a space for emerging artists to develop their talents, and offer educational outreach for students and young people. Performances and other cultural activities can be made known throughout the community through banner printing once the center opens in the summer of 2021.
