Highway expansion to improve traffic in Portland

A project to relieve the congestion in one of the greatest bottlenecks in the country, Interstate 5 through the Rose Quarter in Portland, is being planned.

The idea is to widen the Interstate through that area. Residents of Beaverton who commute to this area often find themselves in bumper-to-bumper traffic in this area, so will no doubt keep a close eye on its progress.

The project is expected to cost more than $715m and add shoulders to the freeway and increase the merging lanes on Interstate-5 between Interstate-405 and Interstate-84 along this 1.8-mile stretch. Print shops can be hired to create materials with maps and plans for the project to keep the community informed of its progress.

A top aide to Dan Saltzman, former City Commissioner Brendan Finn, said the Oregon Transportation Commission is committed to restoring the area. Finn added that once the project is completed, the shoulders of the freeway will be able to accommodate public transit buses during hours of heavy traffic.

A pastor who was born and raised in Portland and has been an advocate for the Northeast and inner North neighborhoods, Dr. Steven Holt, will be the lead facilitator and consultant managing a committee working on the project. Holt said that this project will be an opportunity to do something restorative, as it will also reconnect these neighborhoods, which will bring additional meaning to the project.
