Coaches given new course to help develop girls interest in sports

Nike Inc., with headquarters in Beaverton, is now offering as part of its How to Coach Kids Curriculum – a new 20-minute course designed to build kids’ confidence through sport and play.

This course includes modules designed to make sports more fun for girls and is part of Nike’s vision for development and participation through Women Coach LA, and other partnerships it has with groups like Mamba League and Sport dans la Ville.

With this new course, volunteer youth coaches have tools based on specific sports and training, and use modules tailored to young girls. This means they can enjoy sports and are encouraged to play them for a while, rather than leaving early or not starting at all.

Some of the topics included in the course are helping girls to manage stress, giving girls voice and choice, creating an inclusive culture for girls, and skill-building, risk-taking, and competition. Print shops are often used for such courses to provide further details about the topics and materials covered within the topics.

General Manager of Social and Community Impact at NIKE, Inc., Caitlin Morris, said that having great coaches is the starting point for empowering girls in sports. She added that it is important that young girls have coaches who understand their experiences, can connect with them, and encourage them to persevere.
